Daft Punk to Appear on “The Colbert Report”

Monday night’s episode of “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” featured J Mascis guesting with the Roots, but that wasn’t the biggest surprise of the evening. Out of the blue, at one point, Stephen Colbert ran on stage to dance to “Get Lucky” with Fallon. Turns out this was not just a random whimsical moment.

As the Huffington Post points out (via Daft Punk fansite the Daft Club), the stunt was to promote Daft Punk‘s upcoming appearance on “The Colbert Report”According to the Colbert fan site Colbert News Hub, Stephen revealed the big news to his studio audience during a taping on July 25. To prepare for the robots’ arrival, “Stephen is doing some kind of bit where he dances to ‘Get Lucky’ with various guests in preparation for their appearance,” Colbert News Hub reports. That day, said guest was former Senator Olympia Snowe, who got down with Stephen to “Get Lucky”.

Now, it’s been confirmed that Daft Punk will appear on “The Report” on Tuesday, August 6, as part of the “Colbchella” series.

So, yeah. This should be awesome.

It’s not clear if Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo will be interviewed or performing, or what, exactly, is going on.

Watch a mini-documentary on James Murphy and 2ManyDJs’ 50,000-watt vinyl-only soundsystem

Infiltrating your disco.

At this year’s Manchester International Festival, former LCD Soundsystem man James Murphy and Belgian mash-up originals2ManyDJs debuted a bespoke rig designed for three nights of vinyl-only clubbing. Dubbed Despacio, the monster 50,000-watt soundsystem comprises eight speaker stacks each standing at 11 feet tall plus 48 amplifiers costing £22,000 apiece. In this mini-documentary by The Vinyl Factory, Murphy and 2ManyDJs’ David and Stephen Dewaele introduce their mega-rig, ponder the state of DJ culture and explain the motivation behind the project. “There’s a limit to how cool the three of us are,” admits Murphy, adding that he wanted to use his experience and expertise to “take responsibility for the opportunities we have access to rather than complaining in business class.”

The festival is over but Despacio won’t be decommissioned, according to Murphy, who’s also been busy composing music for Broadway and producing the new Arcade Fire album. “It’s not just for three nights. It’s forever,” he hints. “The system shall live on.”
